After breaking an 89-run partnership between English openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, Ravichandran Ashwin became the second Indian bowler to a historic 500 Test wickets at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on Friday (February 16). Crawley became the 37-year-old’s 500th Test wicket.

Ashwin scripted history without playing 100 Test matches as the third Test against England was his 98th Test match. The all-rounder is also the second-highest wicket-taker in Tests as an Indian. The first on the list is former spinner Anil Kumble, who bagged 619 wickets in 132 matches.

Amid showers of praise, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the all-rounder for this incredible record.

Congratulations to Ravichandran Ashwin on the extraordinary milestone of taking 500 Test wickets! His journey and accomplishments are a testament to his skill and perseverance. My best wishes to him as he scales further peaks. @ashwinravi99 Modi wrote on X
